Lec CRP1 Formula 1 car to race at Goodwood Festival of Speed

 

The Lec CRP1 Formula 1 car will race for the very first time in over 35 years in the Goodwood Festival of Speed come july 1st. The car, which should be driven up the well-known Goodwood hill by Joe Twyman, was last seen in action in the Thruxton circuit in 1979, racing as section of the Aurora AFX Formula 1 series.  Powered using a Ford Cosworth engine, the Lec CRP1 made its racing debut in 1977.

Its high point came throughout the Belgain GP in which year, when David Purley lead the race briefly in the Zolder circuit before being overtaken by Niki Lauda. Purely's father, Charles, had provided the financial backing to the local racing team to graduate to Formula 1 in 1973, using the team initially running a secondhand March chassis.

Notably, Purley created headlines later that year when he stopped his car and rushed to assist fellow driver Roger Williamson, who had been trapped inside his burning car indulging in crash. Despite repeated rescue attempts, Purley was not able to free Williamson, who died of asphyxiation. The CRP1 car is fully restored since being bought coming from the Purley family two years back, using the WDK Motorsport team aiming to race in the hill in under 48sec.

Other notable appearences in the festival include an outing to the rare Fiat S76 land speed record car, which should run for the very first time in 100 years, in addition to a world record plan to try to cover 200 miles on the mobility scooter in 24 hours.
