Alpina D3 first drive
What is new? Driven by 2. 0-litre diesel 320d, the D3 is faster and keener compared to the regular car. So although the four-cylinder turbocharged engine remains unchanged internally, it gets new ancillaries : bigger injectors, a special turbo (part 330d, part Alpina ), the 330d’s intercooler and exhaust and also a revised ECU. The upshot is 197bhp - up 34bhp during the 320d - and 302lb ft, up 52lb ft. What is it like? It’s its not all excellent news, though. There’s more turbo lag and throttle response isn’t as sharp at low revs, but acceleration is strong when the turbo has spooled up. Otherwise the Alpina is really a convincing driver’s car. The ride is firm but just in need of harsh – it rides on 19in wheels shod with 35-profile front and 30-profile rear tyres – as the steering is accurate and responsive. Throw the D3 fast into your corner and It‘ll initially understeer gently while you nudge as much as its limits, but it could be coaxed into mild oversteer in case you give the steering a flick and add lots of throttle. With no limited-slip differential, tail-out antics are limited, although it corners inside a satisfyingly flat and adjustable manner. Grip levels will also be high. Should I buy one? So it’s an entertaining driver’s car. But regardless of the extra power, the Alpina isn’t good enough to start out bridging the gap towards the very talented six-cylinder 330d. And that is why it’s not priced to do this. At £26, 995, the D3 even undercuts the top-spec 320d M Sport using a whisker. Alpina’s UK importer will sell you a D3 in just one trim level. It’ll only are available a typical 3-series colour (other colours can be found at extra cost ) and also the D3 misses on the M Sport’s parking sensors and cruise control. What you will get instead is that the Alpina’s slightly more focused driving experience and exclusivity. Firm ride and low-rev turbo lag are included, but we will see why you’d want that.
