Few cars possess a forebear as fresh inside the memory like the Audi S1’s. The A1 quattro was introduced like a limited run in 2012 having a 252bhp version of a similar 2. 0 engine. Despite being left-hand drive and costing over £40k, each one of the 19 cars destined to the UK sold out soon. The PQ25 platform on which the new  Audi S1 sits was always designed with four-wheel drive on your mind, but apparently the powers that be in the Volkswagen Group weren’t entirely convinced that it was eventually worth the associated engineering costs. So for a significant as the S1 was simply likely going to be a front-drive model powered from the gutsiest version from the omnipresent 1. 4 TFSI, until someone at Audi argued (vigorously, one suspects ) the ‘S’ badge had never been affixed to anything quattro-less before and shouldn’t be now. 

Even then, once they’d got a good way, the brand had to beat significant packaging issues – and insisted on testing the bottom having a limited run of vastly expensive prototypes before finally rubber-stamping the production version tested here. But when something is valued at doing, it’s worth doing right. What we’re playing is among the many quickest, priciest superminis ever produced – so we rather such as the reported history from the Audi S1’s rocky road to production.
